Principal’s Report

  • Last week our Gr. 8-11 students began the pre-registration process for the 26-27 school year. The course description booklet  was shared with and reviewed by students during advisory meetings. Course interest surveys need to be signed by a parent and returned to advisors by Friday, January 30. 

  • Next year’s juniors and seniors will have an opportunity once again to take classes at the Grand Forks Career Impact Academy. Course offerings in Precision Agriculture, Culinary Arts, Aviation, Computer Science, Medical Careers, Building Trades, Engineering & Robotics, and Automotices. Transportation to and from the CIA will be the responsibility of the students. 

  • The Grand Forks girls wrestling team place 2nd (out of 15 teams) at the Fargo Winterslam on Saturday! Kaylee Kurz was the champion in her weight class and Aulani Long placed 5th!

  • Good luck to our Music students who will be performing at the Myra Jazz Festival in Grand Forks on Wednesday. 

  • Congratulations to our boys wrestling team on successful first ever home matches last week! Picking up wins were Xavier Swartz (first home win in program history), Mason Bartels, Jaxon Tozer, Dominic DeFoe, Garrett Krebs, and Caden Kurz (1st ever pin). Also, thank you to our wrestling parents who helped manage the concession stand at last week’s home matches! The boys wrestling team is back at home this Thursday against MPCG and Grafton. 

  • This week, students in grades 6–10 will begin the ND A+ winter interim assessments. The A+ interims are brief assessments designed to measure student growth in reading and math. The comprehensive ND A+ State Assessment will be administered later this spring.

  • Best of luck to our Speech students as they open the season with their first meet this Saturday at Central Valley! Thank you to coaches Mike Bittner and Marla DeFoe for their work with the program this year!

  • The Jr/Sr “Big Bingo” will be held this coming Sunday, February 1, at 1:30pm in the new gym. Bingo cards will be available at the door if you did not purchase any in advance from a junior or senior. All proceeds will go towards the “After Prom Party” on April 11. 

  • The payment deadline for all Mayville State online and in-person classes is Wednesday, January 28. Payments can be made via the student’s online MSU account or by contacting the MSU Business office (701) 788-4757.

It is with great pride that I welcome you to Thompson High/Middle School! THS/MS is a 6-12 school that is home to over 350 students who are educated by 28 highly qualified instructors. THS/MS is connected to Thompson Elementary School and together we have a K-12 enrollment of approximately 700 students. Thompson, ND is a bedroom community 7 miles south of Grand Forks that has a population of around 1100. 

The goal of our staff is to develop life-long learners who, through the course of middle/high school, will develop the academic, social, and workplace skills necessary to compete in the 21st century global economy. 

Academic course offerings at THS range from the required courses in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, to elective departments such as Business, Family & Consumer Science, Health Careers, Foreign Language and Technology & Engineering Education. THS is also a member of the Grand Forks Area Career Impact Academy which provides our students the opportunity to take courses such as Precision Agriculture, Automotives, Building Trades, Construction Essentials, Aviation, Sports Medicine, EMS, Robotics, Culinary Arts,  Programming Essentials, and Civil Engineering/Architecture. Qualified students are also able to take dual credit courses (Advanced Composition, College Algebra, Psychology, Sociology, Speech, and Intro to Education/Special Education) allowing them to earn college credit. We are excited about the opportunities we provide our students and are always striving to improve.   

Extra-curricular activities offered at THS include: Football, Volleyball, Cross-Country, Basketball, Wrestling, Swimming & Diving, Gymnastics, Track, Baseball, Softball, Hockey, Trap Shooting, and Golf. Fine arts activities include Band, Choir, Drama, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Drumline, Summer Theatre, and Speech. THS also offers various clubs to our students which include: FCCLA, FBLA, SADD, TSA, Math Counts, Academic Challenge, JETS, NHS, Student Council, and Yearbook. 

I am currently in my 31st year in education and 22nd as a high school principal.  My wife, Collette, and I have four children; Calen - 25, Cadyn - 23, Sydney - 19, Jena - 17
